Best of luck to Rob Wynn, Director of the Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Programme at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, as he sets off to take on the challenge of The Tour 21 today, in support of Cure Leukaemia!
The Tour 21 will see a team of 25 amateur cyclists, take on the world’s most gruelling cycling challenge by riding the full Tour de France route, one week ahead of the professionals. Starting in Bilbao on 24th June, the team will follow the same route and ride over 3,500km, with over 56,000m of elevation, in just 21 days – all to raise over £1,000,000 for Cure Leukaemia, the official charity partner of the Tour de France.
You’ll recall that last month we sponsored Rob’s launch event attended by, amongst others, Dame Laura Kenny, Britain’s most decorated female cyclist and 5-times Olympic Champion. We’re also sponsoring Rob’s ride and will be getting short daily video clips from him, sharing the ups and downs (literally!) of this mind-blowing challenge. Rob is keen to share this content, unique to C&C Insurance Brokers, as a thank you for our support, and in turn, we’ll be sharing it, daily, across our social media channels, to help raise awareness of Cure Leukaemia and Rob’s fundraising challenge. Last night (19/6/23), Rob appeared on BBC North West Tonight with Roger Johnson, sporting his C&C shirt, created especially for The Tour 21. He explained the importance of the team effort in continuing the work of developing cures using donor blood samples from umbilical cord blood.
Rob fully appreciates the scale of the challenge and says he thinks about it every day but knows it’s worth it. “The fundraising challenge is about accelerating clinical trials and bringing alternative and additional treatment more rapidly to children in Manchester. I know there’s treatment out there and I want to open the trials in Manchester.”
And just to put the challenge in context, in averaging over 166 miles per day, Rob will be cycling the equivalent of Manchester to Oxford, day after day, with a total climb of more than six times the height of Mount Everest!
