C&C recently hosted the annual Sale Sharks Golf Day at Worsley Park Golf & Country Club, with sponsors, players and coaches all in attendance. The highly expectant 22 teams of four all came with the usual levels of excitement and bravado that accompany this event … until the first drive!
The day was once again hosted by former Sale, England and British Lions legend, Mark Cueto, whose job it was to keep egos in check, as well keeping timings and formalities on the rails.
Sharks players such as Ernst van Rhyn, Rob Du Preez, George Ford and Sam James were all in attendance whilst Cobus Weise took to the course to show he knows more about sport than just handling the egg-shaped ball.
C&C entered two teams, outwardly, one from each side of the Pennines, but seeing as Jack McKenna was playing for the Leeds team, someone, somewhere decided that Youngsters & Oldies was a more appropriate split!
Harsh, but, “none taken…” said the predominantly Stockport-based team, who stood by their belief that experience can take you a long way.
After weeks of pouring rain, the ground was heavy and in true Manchester style, participants were treated to all four seasons throughout the day, including hail, which can make buggy driving something of a challenge.
Now we won’t go into actual scores but those who identified as ‘Young’ did finish ahead of the predominantly Stockport-based team, who, it appears, ran Toshiba – the “Wooden Spoon” winners close!
Team Vital took top honours and although no silverware was claimed by either C&C team, Jack McKenna may yet come away with some form of silver. He did particularly well by winning the Nearest-The-Fin competition, by landing the ball tantalisingly close – just about a foot away! As reward for this remarkable feat, he was presented with a £500 voucher for DMR Jewellers. If you extrapolate the time:prize-fund ratio, this equates to about £30,000 per hour. Briefly, this means our Jack was probably the highest-paid sportsman on the planet. Pro rata.
Massive thanks to Lynsey Robinson and the team at Sharks for pulling the day together and to Debbi Smith for sourcing all of our branding and merchandise. It was a fantastic day, even if some of the golf couldn’t claim to be vintage!
